  • Blue Thunder: First Game

While today wasn't the first game for the Blue Thunder, it was the first that Noah and I made it to. (We were wrapping up our vacation in sunny Palm Springs last Saturday.) At this age group, Under 8, the other team's name, the Yellow Hornets, was a bit more descriptive of the game's "swarm" style. By the end of the season the boys will have learned positions and passing, but it's still fun to watch the blob move from side to side early in the season. And even though it's not a score keeping league, the boys are bright enough to figure out that the other team scored once, while we didn't manage to put a ball in the back of the net. Regardless, I think they had as much fun as was possible on this warm day. Now that the field is marked (and we use it for practices) it should be easier to work on spreading out and staying in position during next week's practices.
  • Blue Thunder: Picture Day

For some reason, one of the hottest days of summer is always soccer season's Opening Day / Picture Day. This year was no exception. At a couple degrees over one-hundred, it's always hard to corral the boys and keep them in line (from shortest to tallest, no less). But...we managed. (And the Blue Thunder banner rocks!)

As we were taking the individual photos, I overheard the announcement of a "coaches" game. I figured I'd stick around and see how it goes. Having played soccer as a kid for about 12+ years, pickup games after that, and now coached five different teams, I certainly have the skills to be "somewhat" competitive. However, my (cough...) conditioning is what is sorely lacking. And Saturday did not disappoint. While I had a great time playing in 100+ weather on an empty stomach and a single can of Sprite, my body gave up after about 45 minutes.

Apparently this game is a yearly event. And I figure, if I start to get in shape tomorrow, I just might be ready next year...

  • My Theme Contest Entries

Early this morning, just a couple hours before the deadline, I submitted two entries to the theme contest that we (Telligent) have been sponsoring over the past couple of months.

One of them, called Pretty in Pink, is a simple "Track 1" style entry (dynamic configuration variation of Lean and Green). As the name suggests, it's pink-ish. I figured it was an "untapped space", so I put on my turtleneck and beret, opened up my laptop (don't have a MacBook...yet :P) and did a little last minute design. (You'll be happy to know that I didn't include my hokey flower icons. Had I done so, it would have had more yellow and been a Flower Power theme.)

The other one, Big Avatar, is a simple blog theme. While this was not a "valid" format for the public contest, Telligenti were able to submit pretty much anything. I call it a simple blog theme because there's no menu, no sidebar and no tags. Once I finally upgrade my site, I'll be using it as my blog theme and you'll be able to see my twitter updates inline.

I got a chance to quickly run thru some of the public entries and some other co-workers entries and I think folks will be pleased with some of the new themes that will be available. We're wrapping up the UI that we'll be using to host these themes for browsing, downloading, and perhaps most importantly for some...voting. Look for it soon.

Here's a couple screenshots (click for the larger version) of Pretty in Pink and Big Avatar. Enjoy!
