  • Google's New Web Browser

    logo_sm  I've been using Chrome Google's newest offering a web browser for about a week now and love it!

    My favorite feature is Incognito Mode "Don't want pages you visit to show up in your web history? Choose incognito mode for private browsing." and I love the Dynamic Tabs "You can drag tabs out of the browser to create new windows, gather multiple tabs into one window or arrange your tabs however you wish -- quickly and easily".

    So be sure and check it out and let me know what you think?

  • How To: Change the Default Color for the Graffiti Skittlish Theme

    For some reason I was scratching my head on this and even asked this of the Telligent Tip Master.

    I guess this is partly due to the fact that I am still learning my way around Graffiti and mostly to do with the fact that I am more of a hacker then a dev. This is how easy it is to do and I hope it helps someone because I really love this theme!

    1. Navigate to \wwwroot\files\themes\Skittlish\ and open up the app.js file.
    2. Locate line 75 in the app.js file (in bold) change it to one of the other predefined colors for example I changed mine to cookie = 'fixed blue' I found the color names in the base.css file in the same folder. The choices are blue, cyan, green, orange, pink, red and violet.

    /* el customizer */
    function loadPreferences() {
      var cookie = getCookie('skittlish');
      if (cookie == '') {
       cookie = 'fixed orange';
      }

    I also want to point out that this could all be done using just the site itself no FTP required. Just go to the ControlPanel -> Site Options -> Utilities -> File Browser then navigate to the path above and click on the app.js this will open up another page with an Edit button.

  • Xcopy Deployment Method

    This is one of the greatest and most simplest tools\tips for upgrading or deploying site code which I use almost everyday.

    Basically you are creating a new folder on the server and copying all the existing files and folders for your site to the new folder and the best part is this includes the permissions. Then all you do is re-point your site or virtual directory to the new folder and since the home directory path was set to new folder there is no need for an application pool recycle and you will never suffer the dreaded dll lock. Another great thing about this is you can roll back in a jiffy if needed which is really nice for that unexpected oops when deploying to production.

    What I do is use the date for naming the folders which also makes it easy to remember when the site was last updated. So for example I  would use 052808 for updating a site today. Create a batch file called newfolder.bat with the following command: just edit the path to fit your needs.

    xcopy C:\Sites\mywebsite\050808 C:\Sites\mywebsite\052808  /o /e /y /c /i

    After running the batch file then deploy your updated site files to the new folder replacing any existing files and folders with the same name. More info can be found here in this kb.

  • Manage Multiple Servers and PC's with Royal TS

    If you manage several machines on a network or even remotely through the Internet you have to check out Royal TS!

    Besides being able to connect and tab between active connections my favorite is the session info you can get on a machine. You just click get session information on a selected machine and it shows you any active or disconnected sessions and allows you to reset or send them a message. Now I ask you how many times have you tried to connect to a machine and were denied because of the maximum number of connections.

    There are many more great features and the current build runs stable even on Vista so check it out and let me know what you think.

  • Ahhh rest no, not REST but PTO

    I am taking a couple days of much needed PTO and the funny thing is I have so much personal stuff to catch up that it will hardly feel like rest. But it will be rest for the brain anyway at least for a couple days.

  • New Photos Section

    You may have noticed I now have a new Photos link in the navigation bar. Thanks to a really cool plugin created by Kevin Harder using Microsoft Silverlight and an opensource control called Slide.Show if you don't already have Silverlight installed then you can get it here.

    I don't have many photos up yet but I will be adding some soon, oh and btw did I mention it's using my flickr account.

  • Retired Apache for Blackberry Pearl

    I have had this awesome older apache (Verizon XV6700) for some time now and it has been great. Mostly due to the fact that there are hacks/ports to Windows Mobile 6 which normally only runs on the latest models, but this fact is also what finally starting to wear on me.  I would spend a considerable amount of time keeping it working properly, which in the beginning didn't seem like much but now I felt it was getting out of hand.

    After careful shopping, comparison, reading reviews and not to mention factoring in the financial aspect I decided on the Blackberry Pearl 8130. It has the new 2 megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, built in GPS and it's 3G capable so I can still use this as my backup mobile Internet connection for my laptop which for me is very important. At first it was so much of a change in the way it handles emails that I was not sure I liked it. I recently learned about the filters you can setup to control what gets forwarded to your Blackberry and how it's managed when you reply or delete messages. It really makes it the bomb for email.  The new web browser on it rocks too it even does java.

    So far I am very happy with my choice.

  • One Year Anniversary Telligent FTE

    I can't believe a year has flown by already, wow!  February 28th was my 1yr anniversary working full time, as many of you may know I started out as a contractor for the first 6 months so I have been on the team for a year and a half now.  It's been really busy but really exciting and I have seen many changes some good and some not so good, well mostly good.  We are growing and a very rapid pace so it can be challenging at times and I think that is why I fit in so well because I like a challenge.

    I am looking forward to the year ahead to see what the future may hold.

  • Graffiti CMS 1.0 Released

    I just got the official word that it's Graffiti launch time!

    http://graffiticms.com/blog/graffiti-1-released/

    Graffiti 1.0 Released

    We are very pleased to announce Graffiti CMS 1.0 is now available for download and purchase.

    The 1.0 release includes many bug fixes from beta 2, a brand new (non-blog) default theme, works under Mono, and includes integration with the new Graffiti MarketPlace*.

    There were way to many people at Telligent who made major contributions (code, marketing, copy, documentation, testing, etc) to the project to list them all here, but without all of your contributions we would not have such a high quality 1.0 release.

    I would also like to take a few seconds and thank all the folks who submitted bugs and suggestions to us via email and over on the forums. Your feedback has really helped make Graffiti a much better product.

    Finally, for those of you who took advantage of our introductory pricing, your licenses should be arriving later today.

    * The MarketPlace is a new member of the Graffiti family. It is currently a list of available themes, but will soon become the central place to find, share, and purchase themes, widgets, and plugins for your Graffiti site.

    Be sure and check out the new themes available in the new Graffiti CMS Marketplace

  • Graffiti Themes

    You may have noticed over on my Graffiti blog that I am sporting a nice new theme thanks to the efforts of CS MVP Dave Stokes.  He has converted quite a few themes over to GraffitiCMS and seems to be adding new ones almost daily, way to go Dave!

    You can check them out and download them for free here. They are a snap to install since all they are is a single xml file that you simply just upload through the Graffiti control panel.

  • Rob Howard sets the record straight on Graffiti-vs-WordPress

    GraffitiCMS has not even been released yet (in beta currently) and already the controversy is starting!

    Rob Howard CEO of Telligent sets the record straight on a few misunderstood snippets that have been going around, check out his great post titled "WordPress community hating on Microsoft"

    Personally me being a non programmer and more of a systems guy I can tell you that I find ASP.NET very easy to work with and GraffitiCMS was a snap to get up and running. Techincally speaking we are working on making GraffitiCMS crossplatform compatible and easy to migrate to from other applications like Community Server and WordPress.

    If you have not checked it out yet then what are you waiting for get going!
